Vascular surgery clinic

The Vascular surgery clinic is a branch of St. Catherine's Clinic dealing in the treatment of various human blood vessels diseases – in arteries, veins and lymphatic vessels, ranging from small varicose and spider veins to complex atherosclerotic lesions of the arteries supplying blood to the heart and brain.

For more than 11 years, the Clinic's specialists have been mastering and successfully applying innovational methods and techniques to diagnose and treat vascular diseases. The majority of procedures are performed using mini-invasive techniques allowing our patients to come back to their normal life with minimal discomfort, sometimes immediately after an operation.

Vessels diagnostics

Early detection of vascular diseases is possible through timely diagnostics, primarely with the help of ultrasonography (duplex scanning of arteries and veins). In more complex cases, angiorgaphy is used (direct contrast study of blood vessels), multislice computed tomography (MSCT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Atherosclerotic changes can occur in the arteries of any body organ – head, heart, kidneys, limbs, and appear, respectively, in the form of a stroke, heart attack, pain in the leg muscles, etc.

Besides atherosclerosis prevention (stopping the spread and increase of atherosclerotic plaques) it is very important to restore vascular patency of the modified atherosclerotic arteries. To determine whether the recovery of an artery is needed, Doppler ultrasound is performed, and in difficult cases – angiography.

Vascular stenting

Today, the most gentle and effective method of treatment of narrowings in the arteries of any localization is stenting. The method consists in restoring vascular patency without cuts! Through a puncture in the thigh, a miniature carcass (a stent) is introduced into the problem vessel which then opens and restores the patency of the vessel part.

The main advantage of stenting against the surgery is easy tolerance (no cuts!). Another big plus – no need for a prolonged stay in hospital (usually only one or two days).

In addition, since the stenting procedure is practically painless, there is no need for anesthesia. Duration of the treatment can vary from 10 minutes to an hour.

Treatment of varicose veins

Varicosity (varicose veins) is a disease of the venous system of the lower extremities due to weakness of the venous walls and risk factors (prolonged standing, sitting, obesity, etc.), which causes varicose changes in the saphenous veins. If untreated, the venous insufficiency may progress, which can lead to the formation of trophic disorders in the form of nonhealing ulcers, inflammation of the vascular wall with the formation of blood clots (thrombophlebitis), and other complications.

Timely treatment of varicose veins can not only avoid these complications, but also restore the aesthetics of your feet!

The main indication for endovenous laser coagulation of veins is the presence of a clinically significant reflux in subcutaneous veins. The extent of correction of venous insufficiency is determined after further examination with the help of the Doppler ultrasound of the veins.

Endovenous laser coagulation – this is a mini-invasive procedure performed to treat varicose modified veins. During the procedure, a laser fiber is introduced into the lumen of an affected (varicose) vein, "welding" its inner lining. This leads to the cessation of blood flow through this vein and then to its resorption. As a result, venous blood flows through healthy veins, venous congestion disappears, as well as such symptoms as heaviness and swelling of legs, and trophic disorders. Endovenous laser coagulation is performed under local anesthesia. The control is carried out by means of Doppler and ultrasound. No incisions are made during the laser vein treatment. After an operation, a special compression bandage is put over the operated limb.

After the laser treatment, hospitalization is not required, all the procedures are performed on an outpatient basis. The only requirement after manipulations on veins is to walk in special compression stockings for several weeks or months.

Miniphlebotomy is a part of a surgery on removing varicose veins. The method allows to remove the altered areas of subcutaneous veins of the femur and tibia through a puncture, and not through incisions.

Sclerotherapy is a medical treatment method during which the vein lumen is filled with a drug-sclerosant for its healing.

On the seventh day after the operation a visual inspection is done and the bandages are removed, also allowing to remove the stockings during the night. In a month after the surgery the next visit to a doctor is needed. And further examinations are recommended after 3, 6 and 12 months after the surgery.

The leading specialist of the Vascular surgery clinic is Alexander Ivanisov, a cardiovascular surgeon of the highest category.
