Pain Clinic of St.Catherine’s Clinic

Pain clinic is the first specialized private clinic in Odessa region, where highly qualified doctors treat different pain syndromes such as:

- back pain, pain in legs and buttock;

- joints pain, headaches, radicular pain syndrome; protruded disk;

- pain in neck and occipital region;

- chest pain in case of fractured ribs, posttraumatic syndrome;

- oncologic pain;

- postoperative pain;

- athletic injuries.

Pain Clinic is a unique union of highly qualified doctors and all the diagnostic and treatment resources of St. Catherine’s Cardiology Clinic. Its main purpose is to deliver quick and effective care to the patients, who suffer from pain.

A little bit of history

The first Pain Clinic was founded in 1960 in Washington University. The main goal was to deliver any kind of medical care to patients with pain syndromes. Pain Clinic of St. Catherine’s Cardiology Clinic adopted the experience and treatment methods from the best well-known Pain Clinics.

Where does pain come from?

Osteochondrosis, arthrosis, protruded disks, radicular pain, sedentary lifestyle, bad ecology, occupational injuries, pressure of work, operation after-effect, inheritance, etc. – all the abovementioned symptoms are only a small part of the whole list of reasons why your body can be in pain.

How to cure pain?

Most of the abovementioned diseases are chronic and require different therapeutic treatment methods implementation. There are different special treatment programs.

Multidisciplinary approach is the most effective for treating the patients with different pain syndromes. The advantage of the approach is that doctors from different areas work out specific methods of treatment.

Doctors of St. Catherine’s Cardiology Clinic successfully implement this method.

Our specialists use non-operative treatment of protruded disks. They implant epidural or caudal catheters which exercise treating effect on an injured disk. The method helps to regenerate the disk’s structure, eliminates pain, choked and inflamated disk.

The Pain Clinic of today means:

- highly qualified specialists;

- modern technology base;

- multidisciplinary treatment of every patient;

- good working hours;

- transparent price formation;

- European standards of service.

Procedure description.

Peripheral blocks.

From every level of special cord go nerve roots which send signals from skin to muscles. Sensitive nerve roots can cause pain, numbness, tingling and even weakness in hands or legs.

The area of nerve roots or net is localized with anesthesia, then ultrasound or x-ray examination helps to find an affected nerve and then the doctor delivers the necessary medicine to the localized area. The procedure takes 20-30 min and if used in treatment of discogenic symptoms, ischias, tumor or inflammation in the area of nerve roots etc.

Selective nerve block eases many pain syndromes. This type of blocks postpones the need in surgical intervention or even eliminates it.

Prolonged peripheral blocks.

The different between prolonged and ordinary blocks is in the period during which the catheter will deliver medication to an affected nerve.

Facet blocks.

Facet joints locate along the spine from neck to back bottom and help the spine to move. The facet block is made to locate the source of pain.

After local anesthesia, under an x-ray control a little bit of anesthetic medication is introduced to the facet nerve area.

The indication to facet block is pain in neck, hand or leg in the result of inflammation in the facet joint itself or in the surrounding tissues.

If a facet joint is the reason of pain, then the patient will feel great relief after the procedure and in some cases the pain disappears forever.

Sacrovertebral articulation block.

Diagnostic and therapeutic intrajoints injections of sacrovertebral articulation can provide short and long pain relief.

The needle is introduces into an appropriate part of the joint under x-ray supervision. The position can be supported with a little amount of contrast fluid. The procedure is carried out under local anesthesia, anti-inflammatory medicine or synovial endoprosthesis is inserted into the affected joint and it takes 10-20 min.

The patient, who suffers from arthritis, post-traumatic and artrosis pains are good candidates for the procedure.

Pain relief effect can be temporary (from a week to a few years) as well as pain can be eliminated forever.

Epidural block

It is a momentary injection in an epidural space (space along spine cord and nerves). Delivered drug blocks pain signals passed by nerves. Epidural blocks can be used along the whole spine.

The procedure is carried out under local anesthesia and takes 15-20 min. Epidural injections can be used in any pain condition, even discogenic. The indications for the procedure are ischias, epidural space stenosis.

This type of injections helps to relief many different types of pain syndromes. They can postpone as well as eliminate the need in surgery or any other procedures. It is very important for patients with acute pain in case of protruded disk, disk-degenerative diseases or epidural space stenosis.

Caudal block

Caudal (sacral) block is a type of epidural anesthesia, which requires delivering drug to a sacral canal via sacrococcygeal ligament. Anesthetic reaches sacral epidural space and goes further covering as many segments as the amount of fluid delivered to sacroccygeal ligament allows.

- surgeries on perineum;

- anesthesia and analgesia in tocology;

- operative measures in the area below omphalus;

- prolonged epidural anesthesia.

Epidural or caudal catheter implantation

The procedure helps to get rid of nerve fiber sensation with help of directed medical intervention without surgery on intervertebral disk. This method can be regarded as an interim option between conservative and operative treatment.

According to a specialized method a catheter is implanted into an epidural space, and increases the quality of anesthesia and makes it more effective. The procedure is carried out in an equipped operation theatre. Anesthesia via caudal (sacral) segment is a type of anesthesia, which requires the delivering of anesthetic liquid to sacral canal via sacrococcygenal ligament.

Anesthetic goes further covering as many segments as the amount of anesthetic fluid delivered to the sacrococcydeal ligament allows.

Prolonged epidural catheter implantation

A unique epidural catheter implantation technique and special environment allow installing a catheter for a few days. This combination increases anesthetic effect and its quality.

Epidorolisis is a method of prolonged treatment with a complex of medications via installed catheter led to a place of affected nerve on the level of disk –radicular conflict.

Due to modern x-ray equipment, doctors are able to install catheter in an appropriate place (patient’s dermatomic area), in a short period of time (20-30 min).

The candidates for the procedure are patients with postlaminectomy syndrome, viscid arachnoidite protrusion, and protruded disks.

Most of the patients feel less pain and become more mobile for several months.

Endoprosthesis replacement of synovial fluid

Endoprosthesis (gel-like agent, which replaces intra-articular fluid) is implanted under the ultrasound or x-ray control in aseptic conditions. the procedure takes 10-15 min. The candidates for the procedure are the patients, who suffer from osteoarthrosis.

The effect of the procedure comes after the second injection but for better and longer effect you should better make several injections one week apart.

How long is it possible to treat pain without operative intervention? Which method of intervention is more effective? When is it better to implement minimal invasive therapy? Why is it so important to prevent the pain to become chronic?

The answers to these and many other questions you can find in our new pain treatment program.

Our team has a decisive advantage because our experts discuss every further step of the treatment and find the most appropriate method to cure the patient.
